Sgt. First Class Wilbert Jack "Red" Sturm

d. February 10, 2017

Sergeant First Class Wilbert Jack (Red) Sturm, a long-time resident of both Albuquerque and Cut Bank, MT, passed away peacefully on February 10th, 2017. Red was born in Vernon, Texas in 1929 and was raised on the Waggoner Ranch in a Philips Petroleum oil camp. He graduated from High School in Holiday, Texas and attended Idaho State College where he played football. In 1950, he enlisted in the Army, 3rd Infantry Division, 10th Engineering Combat Battalion, A Company, where he served in the Korean War until 1953. He married Marilyn Ewert in 1952 and together they had three children.

He was preceded in death by his son Michael Sturm, his brother Col. Earl C. Sturm, and parents Earl and Odessa (Scholfield) Sturm. He is survived by his sister Edith (Sturm) Greer of Fairbanks, AK; children Kenneth Sturm of Santa Fe and Carol (Sturm) Erven of Albuquerque; grandchildren Jennie Sturm Gunn and husband Scott, Kassandra (Erven) Barela and husband Daniel, and Donna Erven of Albuquerque; and Steven, William and Viktoria Padilla of Santa Fe; great-grandchildren Madison Sussman and Matthew Felock and his beloved nieces and nephews.

Red owned many Service Stations in Cut Bank and the Albuquerque area for over 25 years before retiring. He also owned and drove dirt-track race cars for many years. He had a love for horses and the "Cowboy way", including his time as a Team Roper in Rodeos and going on cattle drives. He was also an avid big-game hunter. In later life, Red was fully involved in the Cut Bank VFW and wanted to ensure all veterans were honored by participating in the Honor Guard.

The family wishes to thank the Hospice Staff from Legacy Hospice and Albuquerque Home Care Services for their kindness and compassionate care, and especially Tony Stygar and Dollie, his primary caregivers.
