Richard “Richie-Rich” Miles Horton, age 66, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, surrounded by family. He was the eldest of three children born to Betty and Ben Horton on Wednesday, February 22, 1956, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Growing up, Richard beat the summer heat at his grandparents’ cabin in the Holy Ghost Canyon of the Santa Fe National Forest. He was an outstanding track and basketball athlete at Highland High School. After graduation in 1974, he attended the University of New Mexico. Richard married his high school sweetheart, Holly Anlian, in 1986 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Richard and Holly loved to travel the world, during which they met numerous friends, indulged in exotic cuisine, and sought countless waterfront sunsets. Their favorite destinations included Greece, the Hawaiian Islands, and Mazatlán, Mexico.
Richard found himself in various careers, including owning a travel agency, managing a national franchise water company, and becoming a partner at Bencor Properties, a real estate development company. In the latter, he was integral in building over one hundred Walgreen’s stores nationally. He loved the game of golf, playing regularly with his son and friends at courses anywhere in the world. His twin children, Miles and Savannah, were his life's pride and joy, born in 1995 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a dedicated father and always placed their needs before his own. Richard’s legacy to the world is his children, each pursuing graduate medical degrees.
Later in life, Richard found himself drawn to the ocean he so loved. In 2016, he moved aboard a 58’ Hatteras motor yacht in San Diego, California. He and his trusted Captain, Chris Hardwick, embarked on countless adventures at sea. Richard was a rare survivor of esophageal cancer and with it came many obstacles that he overcame through the last decade of his life. Richard is survived by his children, Miles and Savannah; his brother, Ben Horton of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his sister, Becky Cheney of Arlington, Texas; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Betty (Thorne) and Benjamin Kennedy Horton; and his wife, Holly Lynn Anlian of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
