Mike McGuire, 78, died Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He passed away peacefully with his family surrounding him. He was born Thursday, January 21, 1943, in Artesia, New Mexico, to A.B. and Ethel (Henderson) McGuire.
Mike graduated from Artesia High School, Class of 1961. Following graduation, he served with the U.S. Army and trained at Fort Ord in California. Immediately following his military service, Mike attended Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas where he sang in the A Cappella performing group and earned his Bachelors in Biblical Studies with a minor in Chemistry. While attending ACU, Mike met Jeanelle Yadon, the love of his life, whom he married in 1966. They celebrated 55 years of marriage in June.
After establishing residency in the state of Kansas, Mike attended the University of Kansas Medical School. He earned his MD in 1971 and practiced cardiology in Kansas City, Kansas, Roswell, New Mexico, and Albuquerque, New Mexico over a span of more than 45 years. He was a cherished and respected physician by his many patients and colleagues. Mike finished out his career in medicine as an investigator performing clinical trials at Lovelace Scientific Resources. He had great admiration and respect for his colleagues there as well as the history of the Lovelace Health System.
As much as he loved caring for patients in his practice and the hospital, he also felt drawn to the excitement of working with the Fire department and Emergency Medical System in Roswell. He was the medical director for the fire department beginning in 1987 and then the ambulance service several years later. He helped develop the three-tiered response system which is still used today in many counties nationwide.
An avid, life-long learner, Mike spent the small amount of free time he allowed himself studying space exploration, cloud formation, Celtic music, the science of aviation, and history. One of his proudest accomplishments was receiving his pilot's license. He spent many years flying as often as he could. His Christian faith was the bedrock upon which his entire life was built.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ray Lewis and Marvin McGuire. He is survived by his wife, Jeanelle; daughters, Jennifer and husband, Jeff Weathers and Juliet and husband, Lance Bridgesmith; and son, Geoffrey McGuire and wife, Michelle (Vinson) McGuire; nine grandchildren, Mitchell Weathers, Leah (Weathers) Fraze, Connor McGuire, Tess Bridgesmith, Meg Bridgesmith, Matthew McGuire, Lindsey Weathers, Mac Bridgesmith, Caitlyn McGuire, and two recent additions by marriage Sarah (Hibbard) Weathers and Braden Fraze; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 19, 2021, 1:00 p.m., at Grace Community Church, 935 W. Mescalero in Roswell, New Mexico. Mike will be laid to rest in a Graveside Service on Monday, November 22, 2021, in Overland Park, Kansas.
