Melvin "Mel" Morley FitzGerald passed away quietly on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, just five days shy of his 94th birthday. A longtime resident of Albuquerque, Mel was born in Kansas City, MO to Lasella Marie and Leslie FitzGerald, MD. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bill and Earl FitzGerald.
Mel is survived by the love of his life, Bobbie Corinne. They first met in Pecos, NM and married November 24, 1948 in Ft. Worth, TX. He is also survived by his daughter, Linda Carol FitzGerald and husband, Ivan Westergaard; niece, Felicia Ann Miller and husband, Jerry of Galloway, NJ; and nephews, Herbert C. Clifton, Scott FitzGerald and Chris FitzGerald.
Mel enjoyed gardening, fishing, his 1978 Chevy truck, and especially his 90th birthday celebration with the Westergaards and Medinas.
Mel was a proud United States Marine who served his country with honor in WWII in the Pacific Islands of Saipan and Tinian. Following the war, Mel was a Forest Ranger in Pecos and later, as Oil Foreman for Brown Construction Company, he supervised the paving of many New Mexico highways.
Graveside services will be held Friday, September 23, 2016, 12:45 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. A reception will follow, upon returning to Albuquerque, at his daughter's home. Mel loved his pets, Baby and Buffy, so in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Animal Humane Society would make Mel smile.
