Matthew David Mestas, longtime resident of Albuquerque NM, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020. Matt was a loving husband, father of two, beloved brother and friend to many.
Matt was born on July 23, 1970, in Canon City, CO to Dick and Mae Mestas. Matt met his wife, Jennifer Hogan, and together they raised two beautiful children; daughter, Grace, and son, Gabe. He was a doting father - proud of the athleticism both of kids exhibit on and off the basketball court.
Growing up, Matt had a love for football. In 1989, he took his Trinidad High School football team all the way to the state championships, where they won the title of State Champions for the first time in 30 years. This was a day to remember for all of Trinidad, Co and for Matt’s family and friends. He went on to play football at the collegiate level at Adams State College.
Matt had a passion for hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He loved being outside so much, that he made that his life’s passion in landscaping. Matt had an amazing ability to see such beauty in nature. He had a gift to turn empty lots into the most beautiful of landscapes, overflowing with flowers, trees, fishponds and fountains. His legacy of landscaping will live on throughout Albuquerque. He was known to all for his quick wit, joyous laughter, crooked smile and kind spirit. He would drop anything in a second if someone needed him.
Matt was preceded in death by his dad, Dick. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his two children, Grace and Gabe; his mom, Mae; stepdad, Herman; his brother, Shane; and sisters, Sherri and Melissa; the Dubois family; and many beloved cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 7, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. at The Shrine of St. Bernadette Church, 11509 Indian School Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112. A celebration of Matt’s life will immediately follow at The Canyon Club at Four Hills, 911 Four Hills Rd SE.
