Dennis Charles Martin

d. September 10, 2016

Dennis Charles Martin passed from this world on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at the age of 69. Dennis was a two-time cancer survivor, a Vietnam War Veteran, a talented engineer, a loving husband, and a father of three. He was born December 22, 1946, to Harold K. and Hilda Martin and grew up in the small town of Washington, Missouri. As a kid, he repaired TVs and radios and as a teenager he touched up photos by hand while working for a photography studio. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1969 and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1975. While attending Rolla, he met his future wife, Mary, whom he wed on March 30, 1973. After earning his first degree, he was hired by Bendix Corporation in Kansas City, Missouri. Later he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Then in 1981, he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico after being hired by Sandia National Laboratories. He eventually earned promotion to Principal Member of the Technical Staff. Dennis retired at the age of 62 after nearly 4 decades working as an Electrical Engineer. Over the years, Dennis was an active member of his church community. At Our Lady of Fatima Parish, he filled the roles of Eucharistic Minister, Usher, and oversaw Coffee and Donuts after Sunday morning masses. He was the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 189 for over 18 years where he guided numerous scouts, including all three of his sons, to Eagle Scout, the highest achievement possible in Boy Scouts. He was a member of the IEEE and the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) and served on the MTT-S Arrangements Committee; in 1992, he served as the local chairperson to bring the IEEE MTT-S International Electronics Symposium to Albuquerque. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for 31 years. In 2002, he was awarded the Silver Eagle Award by Sandia National Laboratories for his volunteer work in the community. Dennis had many hobbies, including taking apart, building and repairing electronics, building models, and working on his family genealogy. He was very much a do-it-yourselfer, filling the roles of plumber, landscaper, mechanic, and carpenter for his home. Dennis also loved and excelled at cooking. Dennis is survived by his wife Mary, whom he stood by loyally in sickness and in health for 43 years; three sons, Michael, Matthew, and Timothy, to whom he was the best father and role model anyone could ask for; brother, Kerry Martin and wife Barbara; sister, Debbie Parsons; brother-in-law, Michael Devaney and wife Susan; and brother-in-law, Rusty Sanders. We will be celebrating Dennis's life at a Memorial Service on Saturday, September 17th, 2016,10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
