Amadeo (Mayo) Pacheco, Jr., passed away on February 7, 2017. He was 88 and was a WWII Navy Veteran and as many of the "Great Generation", he enlisted when he was 17.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Sadie. He is survived by his sister; four children; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mayo had a full life. He was a safety professional starting at the NM Highway Department in Las Vegas and Santa Fe. During the 50's he was a key player in the NM Civil Defense radiation fallout shelter program. He then became the Safety Director for Los Alamos County, and then went to the NM Association of Counties where he developed their safety and health program. He then worked for large insurance companies such as CNA and SAFECO evaluating risks to determine possible coverage.
Mayo was a career volunteer since his early 20's and continued with the Lions and Elks organizations, and for the last 25 year as a docent for the Natural History Museum in Albuquerque. He loved telling visitors about dinosaurs, volcanoes, and earthquakes. When Mayo retired, someone asked how he liked retirement, he said, "It's not all it's cracked-up to be"
Mayo is now with Sadie.
Memorial donations may be made in Amadeo's name to The Alzheimer's Association or to the Natural History Museum in Albuquerque to help with the Docent Program.
