Winifred Louise "Winnie" Myers

Winifred Louise "Winnie" Myers, died on January 7, 2016. Winnie was born in March of 1924, in McFall, MO. She was the daughter of Leonard and Bessie Harrod. She was raised in McFall, where she grew to be quite athletic. She loved basketball. She played forward on her high school basketball team and she was the team captain during her junior and senior years. She graduated from Johnson School of Business in St. Joseph, MO, right after high school. She studied at Purdue University for about a year, while working in the Dean's office, before moving to Kansas City, MO.
Winnie met her husband Rex Myers while taking dance lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Kansas City. They were married on March 9, 1957, and lived in Cincinnati, OH. They moved to Albuquerque in April 1957 when Rex got a job at Sandia National Laboratories. They were very happy living in Albuquerque; they lived in the same house since 1957. They adopted two children, Steven and Ramona, and raised them from infancy.
Winnie worked part-time at a fabric store while Steven and Ramona were in elementary school. She also enjoyed volunteering at their schools over the years. It was very important to Winnie to spend time with her kids while they were growing up. She was so proud of both Steven and Ramona and was so grateful to be their mom. They were her life. In addition to her own kids, she befriended many young people over the years and helped them in a variety of ways.
She worked as a cashier for Rainbo Baking Company for a couple of years before being promoted to manager of one of the thrift stores. She worked as a manager for ~14 years. Winnie was known for her excellent work ethic. She retired from Rainbo to travel with Rex while he was working in Hawaii for Sandia's small-rocket group. Winnie loved Hawaii; she and Rex made many friends on Kauai. She kept busy until the very end. She was a receptionist in a beauty salon for several years after retiring from Rainbo and did bookkeeping work for a manager of the salon. She and Rex enjoyed traveling with the Roadrunner R.V. Club after Rex retired from Sandia.
Winnie, Rex, and Ramona were members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and were active in the church. For ~15 years, they coordinated volunteers from St. Paul's and AARP to feed the homeless and working poor people at Project Share, Inc., once per month. Winnie and Ramona sang in the church choir. She also volunteered her time and efforts to Roadrunner Food Bank, the Albuquerque Reads program, and other places where needed.
Winnie kept busy with many activities including sewing, gardening, playing the organ, reading novels, traveling, corresponding with friends and family around the country on her computer, watercolor painting, playing with her dogs, and making her delicious fudge to share with friends and neighbors at Christmas time. She relished the opportunity to eat the great meals that Steven prepared for her, both at home and at the restaurants where he was a chef. She enjoyed attending shows at Popejoy Hall and Ramona's Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra concerts. Winnie and Ramona really enjoyed traveling to New York City to see Broadway shows. And Winnie, Rex, and Ramona enjoyed attending the Lady Lobos Basketball games in the Pit; they were season-ticket holders for several years.
Winnie is survived by her husband Rex; son Steven; daughter Ramona; her best friend of 58 years, Johanna Dawson; close family friends Helen Saylor and her son Douglas; and many nieces and nephews, including Robbie Brady, a niece who she loved like a daughter. She greatly appreciated all the love and support given to her by her friends: Lorraine Jordan, John and Jeanette Lederer, Patsy Ortiz, Ben Feerer, and Dave Reinhardt. Winnie will be remembered for her great sense of humor, which she maintained even in her last days. She was a generous, loving person who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
The family wishes to thank Winnie's caregivers from Home Care Assistance who surrounded her with love and excellent care, making her feel safe and well cared for every day for the past two years. And thanks to Ambercare staff who helped her in her final days.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service for Winnie will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 9500 Constitution NE, on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to Animal Humane New Mexico at 615 Virginia Street SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108 (www.animalhumanenm.org)
