William "Bill" Reed

February 28, 1933 — May 24, 2022

Bill passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, in Rio Rancho, NM. He was born on February 28, 1933, in Laramie, WY, and spent summers in a log cabin with a lean-to kitchen in the Snowy Range near Centennial, WY. He graduated from both Harvard University ('55) and Harvard Medical School ('59) followed by an internship and 1st year medicine residency at George Washington Hospital in Washington, DC. He married Ellen Hill in 1957 and was drafted into the army. He worked in Frankfurt Germany for 2 years during a Measles Epidemic in dependents' families. Bill then completed a 3-year residency in Internal Medicine at Madigan Hospital, Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. He moved to Zama Base in Japan as Chief of Medicine at Sagamihara Military Hospital where he served 3 years caring for Viet Nam infectious disease patients. He also initiated an internship program for Japanese Residents which began a life-long commitment to "Mentoring".

In 1969, Bill moved to New Mexico, completed a 2-year fellowship in Infectious Disease, and joined the VA hospital and the staff of the UNM Medical School as professor of Infectious Disease. Bill was appointed as Associate Chief of Staff for Research in 1974 and served as Interim Associate Dean of Research at UNM in 1999. He served as a member and then chairman of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the medical school for many years, continuing after he was emeritus at the medical school. During his career he authored nearly 100 scientific publications and textbook chapters, and mentored numerous students and fellows.

Ellen and Bill enjoyed traveling with mushroom enthusiasts and family all over the world. The family gathers annually returning to the cabin in Wyoming. Bill was a devoted woodworker and never lost his interest in learning.

He is survived by his wife Ellen; three children Martha, Steve, and Richard; six grandchildren; and his sister, Nona and brother, Richard.

Gifts can be made in Bill's memory to the Internal Medicine Resident Education Fund. https://impactunm.unmfund.org/project/32107
