William J Guss

William J. Guss, age 86, of Albuquerque, NM, died Saturday, December 30, 2017. Born February 24, 1931 in York, PA, he was the son of the late Rev. Walter D. Guss and Naomi Grace Slifer Guss. Bill graduated from Somerset High School in 1949 and served in the United States Air Force from 1952 until 1956. He also attended Gettysburg College and later received in Associate of Arts degree in Business from the Roberts Morris School of Business in Pittsburgh in 1958.

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Twila Barron on November 1, 1952. For most of their 55 years of marriage, Bill and Twila lived in North Hollywood, CA where Bill was first an auditor and then a corporate property manager for a nationally known title insurance company. After retirement, they moved to New Mexico in 1993 and made Albuquerque their home base while traveling around the United States and the world visiting family and friends. Bill’s other interests included model railroading and the Lion’s Club. As a Lion’s Club member, Bill was involved in many service projects including the Eye Van, Kids’ Sight Vision Screenings and the Lion’s Club Eye Foundation. He also served as club president and District Governor of the Northern New Mexico District.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Twila, in 2007; and his sisters, Evangeline Stevenson and Evelyn Guss. He is survived by his daughter, Denise G. Dey and husband, Thomas of Durango, CO; grandson, Stephen Dey and his fiancée, Ashley Gibb of San Francisco, CA; granddaughter, Christina Dey of Silver Spring, MD; sister-in-law, Marlonna B. Moore and husband, William of Apollo, PA; several nieces and nephews and their families. He will be especially missed by his family, fellow residents of Bear Canyon Estates in Albuquerque and fellow Lion’s Club members throughout New Mexico.

Memorial Services will be held in New Mexico on Saturday, January 6, 2018, 2:30 p.m., at Bear Canyon Estates, 4440 Morris St. NE. Services will also be held in Somerset, PA at a later date. Interment will take place at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Cemetery, Lavansville, PA.
