William Alexander Garnand, age 77, the beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, musician, pilot, and brilliant engineer, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, July 15, 2022. He was born in El Paso Texas on Monday, April 30, 1945, and met the love of his life Anita, when they were 15 years old. He preferred to be called Alex and had a propensity for extreme mathematical challenges, obtaining a Master of Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1977. Alex considered himself an incredible athlete when it came to cycling. He loved riding his bike long distances including cycling from Albuquerque through Cedar Crest, up the backside of the Sandia Mountains, and up to Sandia Crest. Alex was also a Vietnam veteran serving the army and received a Purple Heart for being shot attempting to rescue school children during combat. After returning from Vietnam, he and his family moved to Albuquerque where he worked for the City of Albuquerque as a civil engineer designing and managing many innovative water systems and waste treatment processes.
Alex is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anita Maria Garnand; his seven children, Alexandria, Donna, David, Dorothy, Marianne, Rachel, and Irene; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, John J. Garnand. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eugenia G. Clair; and his father, John R. Garnand.
Graveside service and Interment will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
