William Hardy Conley

January 16, 1943 — October 28, 2023

Albuquerque

William "Bill" Conley passed away peacefully on October 28, 2023, at the age of 80. He was predeceased by his parents, William Hardy and Mildred. Bill is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Conley, PhD; his son, Dan (wife, Amy) of Snohomish, WA; daughter, Shannon (husband, Mike) of Las Vegas, NV; nephews, Clifton and Christopher (wife, CoCo); three grandchildren; and several cousins, great nephews, and nieces.

Born in Albuquerque, NM, Bill attended the New Mexico Military Institute from 1958 to 1962 where he played football.

Bill served 22 years with the Albuquerque Police Department, holding several ranks and positions, overseeing multiple departments in his career. He retired as Captain in 1988. His accomplishments were numerous, and he received accolades not only from citizens but from other department members, state officials including Governors and Attorneys General, for the difference he made to so many. His notable work as a Detective on several high-profile cases led to improvements in standardized policies, procedures and guidelines within the Department.

After retiring from APD, he moved to Angel Fire, NM and created the Angel Fire Police Department where he served as its first Chief of Police from 1989 to 1995. He continued to serve his community of Northern New Mexico by being elected for two terms as Colfax County Commissioner. He also served as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Colfax County Special Hospital District, Vice President of the Kit Carson Energy Corporation, Director of the Angel Fire Search and Rescue team and Angel Fire Rotary Club.

Bill was a lifelong learner and continued his education throughout his career attending specialized training from the FBI Academy and the National Law Enforcement Academy where he often returned as an instructor. He obtained multiple certifications and degrees in Police Science and Sociology. He was a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Western movies, especially those that starred John Wayne. His greatest joy was traveling with good friends and spending time with his family and his beloved German Shepherds, Gretal.

He was a true protector and provider to his family, his friends and his community. We will memorialize his integrity and loyalty during services on January 13th, 2024, at FRENCH-Wyoming at 9 a.m., followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the National Law Enforcement Officers Fund.
