William Sam Bedwell

November 7, 1921 — September 14, 2018

William Sam (Bill) Bedwell, age 96, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, September 14, 2018. He was born in Sturdivant, Missouri, on November 7, 1921 to Harry and Mattie Bedwell. He had no siblings. He married Wanda Walker, his childhood sweetheart from the third grade, who was his love for the rest of his life. They were married 67 years at the time of Wanda's passing in November, 2009.This marriage produced two daughters, Sondra and her husband, Howard Degenhart, both of whom preceded Bill in death, and Sheila and husband, Kenneth Thompson, who survive him.

Bill was survived by four grandchildren, Jeff Degenhart and Shannon Degenhart, Jeremy Thompson and wife, Amie and Joel Thompson and wife, Kerri. Bill has eight great- grandchildren, Caleb, Noah, Madeline, Abigail, Molly, Troy and Luke Thompson and Amber Degenhart, and one great- great granddaughter, Karaline Olpin. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Jeanetta Walker. Bill was dearly loved by all who knew him. He had a servant's heart, and it was his greatest joy to bring a smile to the faces and hearts of all with whom he came into contact. He was a faithful Christian. He attended and served at the Netherwood Park church of Christ for over 60 years. Bill neither sought credit or praise for the service he gave. He was a humble man who desired to be an obedient servant of his Lord. Bill served honorably in the US Army Medical Corps, and he was a very proud and patriotic World War II veteran.

The family would like to thank everyone who played such a great part in the final months and days of Bill's life. This group of people includes Presbyterian Home Health care nurses, doctors and staff and the Kaseman Hospice facility that provided such outstanding and loving care for Bill. Special thanks are extended to Bill's family at Netherwood Park church of Christ who gave so much support to him and his family until the end of his life. All mentioned here were very caring, encouraging and supportive.

As anyone knows who knew Bill, his parting comments were always these words: "Have a good day today and a better tomorrow!" Bill sincerely meant what he said. We now understand that Bill is experiencing that "better tomorrow". His life has been a great example of Christian living. He has also left us a wonderful legacy to live up to. He has given us all the great comfort and encouragement of a life well lived. May he and Wanda rest together with the Lord in peace!

Bill's wishes will be honored with a military service held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. There will be a short message given in the Chapel at the Cemetery, followed by a Military presentation to include the playing of taps. Cremation has taken place and his interment will be in the same location as his beloved wife, Wanda. No doubt that Bill and Wanda are again truly united! Anyone who wishes is very welcome to attend this service.
