Wayne Thomas Corbett

d. January 31, 2018

Wayne Thomas Corbett, 88, of Albuquerque, NM passed away on January 31, 2018. Wayne was the younger of two children born to Thomas and Beulah Corbett in Haddam, Kansas in 1929.

He lost his father when he was 18 months old; but, his mother and beloved Uncle, Jake Halferty, provided the love and support Wayne needed to grow into a smart, hardworking, and responsible young man. By twelve years old, he was farming his family’s land single handedly and continued farming until he enlisted in the Navy to fight in the Korean War.  He achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer in four years, which is a rare accomplishment.  After the end of his service in 1954, he moved to Kansas City where he earned his associates degree from the Central Technical Institute.

He met the love of his life Delores Johnson in Kansas City and they were married in Albuquerque in 1957 after he began working at Sandia National Labs. They spent 60 wonderful years together and passed within four months of each other.  During his time at Sandia, he rose to the level of Principle Member of the Technical Staff receiving awards and patents for his circuit designs including one used in the first insulin pump.

He was recognized in 1993 by R&D Magazine for development of one of the 100 most technologically significant new products of the year.

Though he had many accomplishments, Wayne will be most remembered for being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his children; Gregory Corbett and wife, Michelle, David Corbett and wife, Marsha K., and Sandra Spence; his grandchildren, Jessi Doering and husband, Drew, Aleigh Diller and husband, David, Jake Corbett and partner, Jake Mayfield, Katie Peeples and husband, Adam, Kelley Centi and husband, Ryan, and Josh Spence; and his great- grandchildren, Olivia Doering, Annabelle Doering, and Josie Diller. He is also survived by his nephew, Tommie Nelson and wife, Janis; brother-in-law, Raymond Johnson and wife, Evie.
