Waltraud Josephine Hartford, also known as Jo, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at the age of 91 in Albuquerque, NM, leaving behind memories that will keep us laughing and crying for ages. She was born on July 17, 1932, in Munich, and spent her childhood in the small Bavarian farming town of Affaltern in Germany during WWII. Waltraud was a kind, generous, and compassionate woman who had a strong and caring nature. She was also known for her protective instincts towards her loved ones.
Waltraud, lovingly referred to as Jo (or Oma to her many grandchildren), dedicated her life to being a devoted mother to her children. Her unwavering love and support were the pillars of her family. She is survived by her sons, David & his wife BJ Hartford, Michael Hartford, and Robert & his wife Katie Hartford. Waltraud was also blessed with numerous grandchildren - Micah, Daniel, Mekyle, Zakary, and Chase, and many great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, MSgt. George W. Hartford whom she had met and married in Augsburg, Germany and experienced the world as a proud military Mom.
In her free time, Waltraud enjoyed playing Bingo, a hobby that brought her much delight. She found solace and happiness in the game, and it became a cherished pastime for her. She had quite the winning streak, impressing friends and foes with her skills. No surprise there, as she held all the cards to her own happiness!
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Waltraud Josephine Hartford will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., FRENCH - Lomas chapel. We'll make sure to honor Jo's love for laughter and joy while recollecting the good times we shared with her, filled with mischief and merriment.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the New Mexico Kidney Foundation or an organization of your choice in her name. Your support will honor Waltraud's memory and help those affected by this devastating disease. She believed in lending a helping hand to those dealt with a challenging game of life.
Waltraud Josephine Hartford will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and compassion will forever be remembered and cherished. May her soul rest in eternal peace. As the cards continue to be dealt, may Jo's soul keep shuffling through eternity, always holding the winning hand.
