Walter William Winslow

Walter William Winslow, M.D., 91, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017. Dr. Winslow was born in the small town of Lacombe, Alberta, Canada on November 23, 1925. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1965 and was a resident of Albuquerque since 1966.
He is survived by his eight children, Colleen Denise Wiedman of Spokane, Washington, Dwight Walter Winslow, M.D. of Smith River, California, Barbara Jean Winslow, Ph.D. of San Rafael, California, Wendi Winslow Kerbel of Evergreen, Colorado, Lee Ann Adams of Richmond, Indiana, Karen Lynn Scanlon of San Diego, California, Kimberly Sue Fahlen of San Diego, California and Jan Elaine Hutchinson of Green Valley, Arizona. He is also survived by his sister, Beth Dunlop, who resides in Lacombe, Alberta, Canada, as well as 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Berneice; his second wife, Barbara; his brother, James Raymond Winslow of Lacombe, Alberta, Canada, and his parents, Floyd Raymond Winslow and Lily Evangeline Winslow, also of Lacombe, Alberta, Canada.
Dr. Winslow attended Canadian Union College in Lacombe, Alberta and obtained his Bachelor of Science from La Sierra College in Riverside, California. He went on to earn his medical degree from Loma Linda University, California in 1952. He obtained his training in psychiatry at Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, Harding Hospital in Worthington, Ohio and the University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Winslow was a member of the medical faculty at the University of New Mexico for 26 years. During his tenure at the School of Medicine, he played a significant role in the development of the Department of Psychiatry and its clinical programs. He served 17 years as the chairman of the department and became involved in the development of three psychiatry clinical programs: the Mental Health Center, the Children's Psychiatric Hospital and the Center for Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Other Addiction (CASAA). Dr. Winslow enjoyed distinguished roles in several professional associations, published more than 70 scientific papers and published a book entitled "History of Psychiatry in New Mexico, 1889-1989." He served on many committees, councils and task forces for the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association and The Veteran's Administration in Washington, D.C.
After his retirement from the University in 1991, Dr. Winslow held consulting positions around the state of New Mexico and served on the Board of Casas de Vida Nueva. He also worked with the homeless program of St. Martin's Hospitality Center in Albuquerque and was medical director of two local psychiatric hospitals, Charter Hospital and Charter-Heights Hospital. Dr. Winslow retired from the practice of medicine at age 80.
Dr. Winslow and his late wife Barbara had a mutual love of travel. They visited many destinations in Mexico with their favorite being Cabo San Lucas. They also visited the Antarctic, South America, Panama, the French Polynesian Islands, China and the USSR.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, February 5, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education, 1001 Stanford Drive NE, Room 3010, Albuquerque, NM 87131. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Dr. Winslow's name to a charity of your choice.
