Walter B. Steele, age 89, passed away on August 2, 2015 He was a New Mexico businessman and Cattle Rancher. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Elaine; his son Gary and his wife Kristine; his daughter Kim and her fiancAC. Christopher; two grandsons Carson and Connor who lovingly called him Pa. He was preceded in death by his son Mike and his daughter Amy. Walter joined the Navy in 1942 at the age of 16 during WWII as a Pharmacist Mate. He married Elaine on November 19, 1945 before being honorably discharged from service in January 1946. After his discharge from the Navy he enrolled at the University of Houston, receiving his Bachelor's degree in 1950. After graduation Walter went to work for Sinclair Oil then Gulf Oil Company and was transferred to Albuquerque in 1957. In 1959 Walter acquired Rio Grande Oil Company, a Petroleum Jobbership. He was a past President of the New Mexico Petroleum Marketers Association. In 1980 bought a Ranch in Corona, New Mexico. His love of ranching grew each year. In 1993 he received the Cowbells Rancher of the Year Award. He retired from the Oil Business in 1985. In 1999 he retired from Ranching and returned to his Albuquerque home where he enjoyed his remaining years. Of the many things he taught his children, one which was primary to his character, was to treat everyone fairly, no matter the cost. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. A private entombment will be held for the immediate family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Mexico Christian Childrens Home - Portales, 324 Abilene Ave., Portales, NM 88130.
