Walter Earl Mason

Walter Earl Mason passed away on Wednesday January 6, 2016 in Rio Rancho within the tender care of Casa De Paz and Hospice Compassus
Walter was born April 19, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio to father, Walter Daniel Mason and mother, Florence Inez Mason. Walter graduated from Compton High in Bell, CA before joining the U.S. Navy in June 1944 during WWII.
He served in the South Pacific returning after Wars end to CA to meet his 'Baby Bother, Robert'. In 1949 Walt married the love of his life, Elizabeth Jane Mason, (Betty) and quickly added sons, Allen and Donald before moving to New Mexico.
Walt and Betty moved their young family to New Mexico 1953 instilling their love and appreciation of the outdoors, the arts and sports. In the late 50's they added their daughter Erin to the family. In the late 60's Walt embraced running by competing in marathons and mile runs. 1970 he held the NM State Mile record for 50 and over at 5:26.3. In his words, "Smoking!"
Working with Asbestos Union #76 for 35 years from apprentice to Business Agent these work experiences engrained his greatest pride - the financial support of his grandchildren's higher education.
He is survived by his brothers, sister, cousin and spouses; Warren Mason, Richard and Dorothy Mason, Donna and Lee Guzy, Robert and Mary Mason, Ruth & Lowell Mast; son and spouse, Allen Mason and Judith Mason; daughter and spouse, Erin Mason-Kerr and Joel Kerr; grandchildren and spouses, Kyle and Rachael Mason, Abby Kerr, Katelyn Mason, Evan and Alisa Kerr; nieces and nephew, and one great grandson, Lane Mason.

Walt was preceded in death by son, Donald S. Mason and wife, Elizabeth J. Mason.
