Walter Kleweno, Jr. passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Allene. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Carrie Mae Kleweno.
Walter felt privileged to have grown up in Alaska where he developed his love for the natural sciences. He received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Geology from Washington State University. He had a 31-year career with Exxon in Oil & Gas Exploration, Production, and Minerals Exploration.
Walter was an award-winning photographer, an avid bird watcher, world traveler, and a supporter of several performing arts organizations. He was a long-time volunteer at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science and a past president of the Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center. The Kleweno’s were awarded the Best Friends of 2005 by the Friends of Art of UNM Art Museum. In 2011 Walter and Allene were inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame by Silver Horizons New Mexico.
