Walter Otto Bartels was born Friday, January 27, 1922, in Altamont, Illinois. He was predeceased by his wife, Iona, on July 17, 2007. He is survived by his children, Ron, and wife, Rece, Kathleen, and Leon and wife, Connie; grandchildren, Rory Tyson and husband, Coby, Jason Bartels and wife, Nicola, and Phillip Bartels; six great-grandchildren, Clara, Emma, Molly Bartels, Avery, Aurora, and Tabor Tyson; sister, Enola; brothers, Arlon and Lester; and many nieces and nephews.
Walter graduated from Concordia University in 1942. He served as teacher, principal, and organist in Lutheran schools in Kansas and Oklahoma. He received his master's degree in Administration from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. He was installed as principal and teacher at Immanuel Lutheran School in Albuquerque. During his time as principal and teacher from 1942-1987, Walter was a faithful, spirit-filled, capable, calm, and innovative leader. God has truly blessed the congregations and the children served through the work and dedication of Walter.
Walter was a man of strong faith. He loved his Lord and served him faithfully, steadfastly, and enthusiastically. We can rejoice that Walter is now at HOME! "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life"- Revelations 2:10.
Services were held Friday, July 22, 2022, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Interment took place at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
