Virginia Kathleen (Kathy) Foster, age 84, of Albuquerque passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2019. Kathy was born on Friday, August 31, 1934 in Cincinnati, OH. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Kenneth A. Pitt and Margaret Pitt; her husband, Irving Alden Foster (Irv); and sisters Margaret Esch and Nancy Wolcott.
Kathy married Irv on June 14, 1952 in Chicago, IL. They moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1957. She was a dedicated mother to Vicki, Cheri, and Jeffrey. She was very involved with a bowling league for many years at Holiday Bowl, not only as a bowler on various teams, but also as the league secretary. She was one of the original members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in the early 1960’s, and was in the Martha Women’s Circle worship group. Kathy was very active in the Assistance League of Albuquerque in the hospitality group and proud of her volunteer work in the Bargain Box Thrift Shop, in preparing meals for the local senior citizens, and playing Bingo with physically and mentally challenged citizens. She also volunteered at the Blue Portal Gift Shop in Old Town associated with the Assistance League of Albuquerque that provided a venue for many senior crafters to show and sell their work.
In 1990, Kathy and Irv began their travels in their 5th wheel RV. During their travels, they took classes in making stained glass. Kathy made beautiful and carefully crafted works of art using her favorite medium of hummingbirds and Southwestern pottery, and her most popular pieces were her stained-glass angels. Kathy and Irv were Snowbirds and lived in Tucson, AZ, and Casa Grande, AZ among other places, and finally decided to settle in Roswell, NM in 2007. They lived in Roswell until Irv’s death in 2009, at which point, Kathy returned to Albuquerque.
Kathy is survived by her daughters, Vicki Sue Garrett and Cheri Lynn Melkus; her son, Jeffrey K. Foster, all of Albuquerque; three grandsons, Andrew Dwight Kellner and his wife, Ruthi of Albuquerque, NM, Capt. Ryan Alexander Melkus and his wife, Callie, of Fort Stewart, GA, Dr. Kiel Alan Melkus and his wife, Kelly of Colorado Springs, CO; two great-grandsons, Adin Dwight Kellner and Riley Dean Kellner; and two great-granddaughters, Adelyn Lee Melkus and Cora James Melkus.
The family is deeply grateful for the caregivers Kathy had at the Mariah House Assisted Care Facility who provided their tender and compassionate care for her for the past seven years.
