Obituary for Virginia DeLaO

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Virginia "Ginny" DeLaO, an extraordinary woman who lived a remarkable 86 years. Born in the sprawling landscapes of rural northern New Mexico, Virginia's journey was one filled with love, laughter, resilience, and unwavering independence.

Virginia was a devoted mother to five children: Marie "Rhea", Carlton "Tawny",

Kelly, Jason, and Eric. In, who will carry her spirit forward as they navigate life without her physical presence. She was a proud grandmother to many, and her legacy extends to numerous great-grandchildren, each of whom cherished her unique love and perspective. She is preceded in death by her mother Juanita "Jenny", father Baudino "Curly", and sister Dolores "Dolly". She is survived by her siblings Rudy DeLaO of Santa Fe, NM, Eleanor Jones of San Diego, Toni Vorhies of San Diego, Terri Trussler of Las Vegas, NM, her children named above, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Known for her fierce independence, Virginia was unapologetically herself-a woman who was both funny and charismatic, yet, at times, delightfully blunt. She possessed a stubborn streak that only those closest to her understood was rooted in an immense love.

Throughout her life, Virginia was not only a nurturing figure to her family but also ahead of her time in seeking independence and formal higher education. She was a pillar in the recovery community. Drawing from her diverse lived and educational experiences-both challenging and beautiful-she used her insight to empower others, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched. She successfully challenged and broke traditional gender norms and roles as she navigated life, through education, interpersonal relationships, and personal transparency. Her sharp intellect and keen observation made her a sage adviser to many.

In the last decade of her life, Virginia intentionally prioritized time with her beloved children and grandchildren, creating a tapestry of memories that will be cherished for generations. From her love of a good, sometimes ribald joke, sense of humor and feisty demeanor, she leaves behind countless stories and lessons that will continue to inspire her family.

In late August 2024, Virginia faced a diagnosis of advanced carcinoma, demonstrating the same fierce spirit she carried throughout her life. She passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones.

Virginia DeLaO's legacy lives on through her family, extended family, and all those fortunate enough to have known her. May her memory be a blessing, reminding us to treasure our loved ones, embrace our true selves, and always find time for laughter.

A celebration of Virginia's life will be held via Google Meet on Sunday November 3rd, 2024 at 12pm MST.
