Veronica Mitchem, a long-time Albuquerque resident, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, December 13, 2015. She was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana on August 28th to Henry and Naomi (Welsh) Kinnaird.
She survived by her brother, Joseph Kinnaird; her children, Roxy-Ann Mitchem-Horn (Mikel), James Jr., (Jackie), Sylvia Crowder (Larry), Michael, Steven (Patsy), Gail Overton, and Phillip (Lisa); 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and scores of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Army LTC (retired) James A. Mitchem, and ten siblings.
Veronica graduated from nursing school in 1952, and practiced nursing for almost 50 years. She married her husband, James in 1953 and traveled the world with him and their children as a dedicated Army spouse. Veronica had a passion for life and loved to throw a great party. She loved to cook, and anyone who came to her house never left hungry. Veronica was spirited, no-nonsense and dedicated to her family. She was very health conscious, loved reading, and enjoyed the arts. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas Boulevard NE, Albuquerque, NM. Interment with her beloved husband will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
