Vernon Gabbard, 77, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Polly; daughter, Jill Vice (Bryan); son, Joshua Gabbard; grandchildren Zach Savage (Abby), Reagan Vice, Allie Vice, Juliana Gonzales, and Sophia Savage; and one great grandbaby, Wyatt Savage. He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Alma Gabbard; and daughter, Gina Savage.
Vernon was a pillar of strength and integrity. His mentorship inspired those around him to strive for excellence and pursue their passions. He embodied a zest for life and a laugh that was contagious. He and Polly created a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
A science and math field was inevitable for Vernon as that was the way his mind worked. He held a BS (University of Missouri) and MS (New Mexico State University) in Electrical Engineering. He served 20 years as an Officer in the United States Air Force. Upon retirement he worked for Sandia National Laboratories for an additional 25 years, 13 of those years as Director of Tonopah Test Range. He left a significant impact in the field of research and development, earning the respect of colleagues and peers alike.
Vernon was an avid reader and learner. He continued reworking engineering and math problems well into his retirement, just to keep it fresh. He taught college courses in math and willingly tutored anyone who needed help. Vernon was known for his love of boating, water skiing, snow skiing, and golf. He patiently taught a countless number of family, friends and friends of friends to water ski.
What will be missed most is the unconditional love he had for his family, his wisdom and guidance, and his generous heart. He was loved beyond measure. His absence has left us with a void that can't be filled, but we find our comfort and peace in God.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, 3:00 p.m. at FRENCH- Wyoming.
