Velma Cummings Bennett was born 21 May 1931, and after highschool in Barstow, TX, Velma enrolled at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. In 1949, at age 18, Velma married Marlowe Dwayne Bennett, and they had one daughter, Rebecca Ann Bennett, born 10 September 1950; two granddaughters, Heather LeChien, born 3 August 1983 and Hayley Burnham, born 23 May 1985; and one great-grandson August Burnham, born 25 January 2014. Velma and Marlowe lived the first six years in Dangerfield, TX where Marlowe worked at Ordiance Aerophysics Laboratory. Velma and Marlowe moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1956. There, Velma worked at the telephone company for twenty years, and Marlowe worked at Sandia Laboratory for thirty-three years. In 1976, Velma began preparing Sunday lunch for the entire family, which entailed shopping for food, and cooking a meal, and this work, her hobby, continued for the next 37 years. Now, in year 2014, although Velma had already been treated for lung cancer with both chemotherapy and radiation, the terrible disease took hold and eventually her recent struggle ended Tuesday, 12 August 2014. Velma Bennett died at age 83 and she found permanent peace in heaven.
