Tish Carnes Brown was born on January 25, 1944 to Chapin Sears Carnes and Amelia Evans Carnes in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The family relocated to Albuquerque in 1946.
Tish graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in political science and worked at the NM Department of Health and Social Services as a child welfare worker. She and her fellow caseworkers established the Pueblo foster home program. This enabled children who needed temporary care to securely remain within their communities and culture.
Tish moved to New York City in 1970 where she earned a master’s of social work degree and worked professionally at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and at Calvary Hospital.
Tish met and fell deeply in love with David Osmond Brown who she married on June 3, 1978. They traveled throughout Europe and Tish wrote and published articles about these travels. She moved back to Albuquerque after Dave’s death in 2001. She lost both sisters, Amy Carnes in 1997 and Mary Carnes in 2006. Tish passed September 23, 2017. She is survived by her brother, nieces, cousins, step-daughters and other extended family and friends who loved her.
Tish’s memorial service will be private. She will be laid to rest by the side of her husband Dave at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Chestertown, Maryland.
Tish loved animals and was delighted whenever she saw a rainbow. “When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth.” Genesis 9:16
