Tim D. Montoya, age 48, lost his hard-fought battle to pancreatic cancer on Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the University of New Mexico Hospital. He was born on Sunday, May 3,1970 in Albuquerque, NM, the son of Louie Montoya and Helen (Martinez) Montoya.
Tim graduated from Valley High School with the class of 1988. During high school Tim had many friends that included his teammates from the VHS football and wrestling teams. He continued many of these friendships into adulthood including, most significantly, the friendship and life-partnership with his high school sweetheart, Janice Rodriguez. Tim married his best friend in 1992 and they celebrated 26 years of marriage in June 2018. They resided in Albuquerque where they were later blessed with three phenomenal children who have filled their lives with love, joy and pride.
Tim was a respected coach throughout the community because of the connections he formed with the players he coached over the years and their families. More important than teaching athletic skills on the field or court, Tim communicated essential life lessons to his athletes to help them grow into responsible adults. Tim worked very hard to build a great life for his family and was known for his generosity. He worked at Smith’s for 26 years and at Sandia National Laboratories just shy of 25 years. Tim was well-known for his famous Lobo tailgating, annual Matanzas, team barbecues, and delicious beef jerky. Razzing old friends and newcomers, alike, no one was overlooked by his joking ways. You knew you were loved by Tim if you were ever on the receiving end of one of his many pranks.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey Martinez; grandparents, Refugia and Mike Montoya, Delfina and Celestino Martinez, and uncle Leroy Montoya. In addition to his wife, Janice (Rodriguez) Montoya, Tim is survived by his son, Timothy (TJ) D. Montoya Jr., TJ’s girlfriend, Miranda Juarros; son, Joshua Montoya; daughter, Ariana Montoya; two brothers, Terry Montoya and wife, Melissa of Phoenix, AZ; Teddy Montoya and his wife, Deborah of Albuquerque; many nephews, nieces and friends. The family would like to thank the University of New Mexico Cancer Center and Hospital for their amazing care and support to Tim.
