Thomas Joseph DeCoster, age 77, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.
Tom was born in Orange, New Jersey; received his BS in Sociology from St. Peter's College in 1967 and earned a master's degree in social work from Fordham University in 1970. In his 45-year career he specialized in addiction treatment services and helped 100's of people achieve a life of sobriety. He retired as Clinical Director of Addiction Services, Fort Myer, Virginia in 2016.
Tom thoroughly enjoyed his retirement life, meeting new friends, traveling, sampling new foods and activities and exploring the beauty of New Mexico. He was passionate about culinary experiences, riding his horse, Pap, and music. He enjoyed cultural activities of any kind and was especially thrilled this year to see his favorite musical artist, Judy Collins, in concert. Tom was a very caring spouse, father, brother, grandpa, and friend. He was a humble man who lived a life of integrity.
Tom is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marion; his children, Daphne DeCoster, Colleen Fischvogt and Jessica Foley; his stepdaughter, Stephanie Burkhalter; and six grandchildren, Colin, Gwen, Lily, Davy, Armen and Roman. He is also survived by two brothers, Frank and Kevin DeCoster; and three sisters, Marilyn Smith, Maryellen DeCoster and Sheila Kaufer in addition, he leaves many cherished nephews and nieces. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Helen DeCoster of Roseland, NJ and two sisters, Patricia Morel and Sister Lenore DeCoster.
