Lt. Col. (retired) Thomas G. Davis, United States Marine Corps passed away February 25, 2016, in Albuquerque, NM at the age of 87.
Tom was born and raised in the tiny town of Melrose, New Mexico. His parents, Carl and Lois Davis, were the town's pharmacists. Tom was a talented athlete at Melrose High School and long remembered many of his opponents from surrounding towns.
As a young man Tom moved to Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico, with thoughts of becoming a high school teacher and coach. At UNM he played on the Lobo basketball team. He joined the Naval ROTC, completed the program and joined the Marine Corps, beginning a career that spanned over 24 years.
It was also at UNM that he met Katy Bunnel, who would become his wife of 65 years. Tom, Katy and their two children lived all over the United States during his career, and Tom served three tours overseas.
In 1973, the couple retired to their beloved Albuquerque and became members and active participants of the First Presbyterian Church. They both served in various positions of responsibility and enjoyed the fellowship of a wonderful group of T.G.I.F friends. Tom founded the Marine ROTC program at Eldorado High School and taught that program for a number of years. He also joined the Albuquerque Kiwanis Club and was an enthusiastic Kiwanian for many years. Tom and Katy were avid Lobo basketball fans.
Tom was known for his integrity, warmth, hospitality and gregarious nature. His sense of humor was with him until the end. He is survived by his wife, Katy; son, Clark; daughter, Marsha Mitchell and her husband Paul; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
The family wishes to thank the caring and supportive staff of Legacy Hospice. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 10, 2016, 10:00 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust St. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102. Ennichement will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Albuquerque Kiwanis Club (www.kiwanis-albuquerque.org).
