Thomas Bell

THOMAS EUGENE BELL

Age 81, a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, October 18, 2012. Born in Vail, IA on December 5, 1930, Tom grew up in Denison, IA and Omaha, NE. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from the Municipal University of Omaha (now the University of Nebraska-Omaha) in 1954 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Tom earned his Master of Arts in Physical Education in 1969 from Sacramento Sate College (now California State University, Sacramento) in 1969. In 1970 He retired from the Air Force as a major and moved his family to Albuquerque, NM, where he attended the University of New Mexico and taught Special Education for the Albuquerque Public Schools for 24 years, first at Buena Vista School, then at Manzano High School. Along the way Thomas served as a deacon for Northminster Presbyterian Church in Sacramento, CA, an elder for Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque, and a coach for the Special Olympics. He also volunteered for the St. Andrew's Society of New Mexico, Meals on Wheels and the Martineztown House of Neighborly Service. A long-time runner and sports enthusiast, Tom was a devoted fan of the UNM Lobos and the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol (Cady) Bell of Albuquerque; his son John Bell of Sacramento, CA; daughter, Barbara Bell of Albuquerque, daughter - in-law Sheri Crider; two granddaughters, Erika and Jessica Bell-Crider; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings. Services will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 11:00 a.m., Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle SE, Albuquerque.
