On June 28th, 2016 on a beautiful morning in New Mexico, Terry Michael Hertel, 64, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away at his home in Bernalillo County. Terry is now back with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and our Beloved Father.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, July 6th at the French Mortuary at 10500 Lomas Blvd NE in Albuquerque, NM
Terry Michael Hertel was the oldest of two children. He was born in January on the 18th, in the year 1952 to his parents, Henry Joseph Jr. and Leah Jean Hertel.
Terry is survived by his only child Zora Lyn Hertel. He is also survived by his mother Leah Jean Hertel, sister Suzanne Stahl, and nephew Joseph Stahl.
Terry attended grade school at The Blain School, in Sully County, SD and went to high school at The Onida School in Onida SD. Terry sang in the choir and enjoyed participating in school plays.
He was awarded the American Legion Award for Academics as an eigth grader and as a senior in high school.
Terry was a true "South Dakota Boy", he loved growing up in South Dakota on his family farm helping his father Henry Joseph Hertel work in the fields, plowing with the tractors and taking care of the animals and farming responsibilities.
Terry had a brilliant mind full of questions, ideas, and curiosities. He loved Geology, Chemistry, and Metallurgy. He continued his interests in those fields by attending the South Dakota of School Mines and Technology, where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry. Terry worked successfully in the mining industry in Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, Arizona and Colorado. The most memorable was the Pegasus Gold Mine in Zortman, Montana where he did Minerals Research and practiced Metallurgy .
Terry authored a very well respected article in his field of expertise explaining Mine Rock Characterization while working at the Zortman and Landusky Mine in Montana. It was presented to an entire convention of scholars. Terry was extremely proud of his career, he loved his work.
In recent years Terry worked for the state of NM in the New Mexico Environment Department as a Geoscientist. For the past 10 years Terry was with NMED Air Quality Bureau as a staff manager for the Operations Section and in the Petroleum Storage Tank Bureau.
In 1981 Terry married Margaret Jane Cywinski. Their daughter Zora Lyn Hertel was born on June 30th, 1982. Above all Terry was a devoted father and dedicated his life to being there for his daughter Zora.
Zora truly was his pride and joy and Terry will be greatly missed by her.
Over the years Terry liked day trips, panning for gold and rock hounding. Terry's passion was the science of gold and gold mining. He had 20 plus years working with gold and uranium metals. He also talented with wood and made many mirrors in the form of the native Zia symbol, a beautiful kitchen chopping block and coffee table.
He also loved cooking and baking for co-workers who loved his green chile apple pie, and Zora loved his red chile pork posole. Terry enjoyed his flower gardens and spending time with his cats "Nacho" and "Crash".
Importantly, Terry was an avid inventor and used his brilliant mind to come up with new ideas. All his questions are finally answered now, and there is more than he could have ever imagined! He is truly happy now.
