Suzanne Ivener-Pettersson

May 21, 1946 — February 27, 2016

Suzanne, 69, beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend passed away after battling a long illness on February 27, 2016. Born May 21, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, she moved to Albuquerque in 1962. She was preceded in death by her father, Max Ivener; and is survived by her sons, Elias-Axel Pettersson and Efraim-Eugen Pettersson and his wife Phetrada and their daughter, Daenerys Miriam Pettersson; mother, Francys Ivener; brother, Brian Ivener and wife Bonnie, twin brother, Alan Ivener and wife Ruth; nieces, Brandy Ivener, Brooke Lipman (Sol), Stacia Stanley (Michael); nephew, Aaron Ivener (Lisa); and myriad extended family and friends.

She was an active volunteer in the Albuquerque Jewish community and board member at Congregation B'nai Israel, serving as Sisterhood President from 1992-1994. She was a board member at local and regional levels and was honored as Woman of Achievement. Suzanne helped start the Kindergarten Sunday School at B'nai Israel. Her favorite time as Sisterhood President was working with monthly programming and welcoming new members using her great sense of humor.

Her love of family was complemented by her love for animals. From her beginnings on a farm in Sioux City to her life in Albuquerque, Suzanne raised horses and dogs, raccoons and iguanas; she was a court finalist in the NM State Fair Rodeo Queen Contest in the early sixties. She also trained and showed prize-winning Dobermans in Germany and the United States.

Suzanne was a graduate of Manzano High School and the University of New Mexico. She was an avid artist-painter, sculptor, and weaver-and put these skills to use as a volunteer for Art in the Schools and Explora! A world traveler and language aficionado, she traveled and lived in Sweden, Spain, France, Israel, Canada, and all of Western Europe. At various times in her life, she spoke Swedish, Spanish, French, and a smidgeon of Yiddish.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Suzanne participated with her children in tennis, soccer, table tennis, running, and high jump. In Albuquerque, she owned and operated a small Scandinavian Imports Boutique, Suzanne's Stuga. With great foresight, she designed a large playroom in the back of the store; its centerpiece was a one-of-a-kind Lego table, ordered directly from Denmark, to entertain children while their parents shopped. The Lego table's legacy lives on in the lives of Suzanne's grandnephews.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Kaseman Hospice for their loving and tender care of Suzanne in her final days.

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on March 1, 2016, Congregation B'nai Israel (4401 Indian School N.E.). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Congregation B'nai Israel.
