LIBIT, SUSAN MARTHA
Susan Libit, 69, passed away in her home on Thursday, January 7, 2016. She was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on September 4, 1946. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin and her master's degree in social work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She spent three decades working as a clinical social worker in Albuquerque, focusing her private practice on family and marriage counseling. In work and life, she was unfailingly loving, charitable, rational, self-sacrificing, and tolerant. She subtly but substantially left her mark in Albuquerque as a member of Congregation Albert; a founding member of Maggie's Giving Circle; a longtime board member and vice chair of La Familia-Namaste; and an active parent at Manzano Day School and the Albuquerque Academy. She was steadfastly devoted to her family, especially her son and husband, who she always put above herself. She was the consummate animal lover - endeavoring to rescue every sparrow that crashed into the windows of her home; showering attention on her dogs; donating to the zoo; and faithfully cheering on the city's most revered species, the UNM Lobos. Among her varied culinary talents, she made a spectacular matzo ball (the secret: seltzer water). And when it came to the vicissitudes of life, Susie practiced what she counseled. This was especially true in the last few years, as she confronted an ALS diagnosis with uncompromising grace and poise - continuing to counsel clients even after she had lost her ability to speak. In her last hours of life, when asked how she was doing, she gave her bedside audience a determined thumbs-up. Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Jeffrey Libit; her parents, Lee and Louis Fine; and her sister, Maxine Fine. She is survived by her son, Daniel (Ashley), as well as her many wonderful friends and dear relatives. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, January 17, at FRENCH - University, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Albuquerque. A Graveside Service will follow at Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, 700 Yale Blvd. SE. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ALS Association, New Mexico Chapter, 2309 Renard Pl. SE #202 Albuquerque, NM 87106; the Les Turner ALS Foundation of Chicago, 5550 Touhy Ave #302, Skokie, IL 60077; La Familia-Namaste, 2400 Wellesley Dr NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107; or Maggie's Giving Circle, 624 Tijeras Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
