Steven Robert Egan of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away on Tuesday, August 20th, 2024. He was 43. Steven was born on March 2nd, 1981, in Portales, NM to Robert and Janet (Luttrell) Duarte. Following Janet and Robert's passing, Steven was adopted by his maternal Aunt Brenda and husband Ron Egan. Steven grew up in Carlsbad, NM, where he was active in baseball and football. Steven developed an interest in creating and listening to music at an early age which spanned his entire life; a love that he would eventually share with both of his daughters.
Steven graduated from Carlsbad High School in Carlsbad, NM, in May of 1999, and moved to Albuquerque, NM, shortly thereafter. Steven married Sarah Pyeatt in July of 2001 with whom he shared two wonderful daughters; Jana, born in 2007, and Veronica, born in 2009. He attended Central New Mexico College, School of Automotive and Diesel Technology, from 2011 to 2013 where he obtained his degree and certifications as a master auto and diesel mechanic. As a mechanic, Steven spent many years doing one of the things he loved most, working on cars. Most recently, Steven was employed by American Gypsum and took great pride in his role as a quality assurance laboratory technician.
Steven was an avid outdoorsman and traveler who loved spending his free time camping, hiking, fishing, and exploring new places with his beloved daughters, Jana and Veronica. He was a car enthusiast and spent much of his free time working on and maintaining his prized cars. Steven had a serious, deep love for music; hip-hop especially, an interest which he shared enthusiastically with his girls. They attended concerts and cultivated their music collection together. Most importantly, Steven was an endlessly devoted and loving father to his daughters. His greatest joy came from the time he spent with Jana and Veronica. Together, they would find new restaurants to try and rate them afterward, plan new places to travel to and vacations to take, listen to all of his favorite old-school music, and so many other memorable activities.
Steven's family and friends will remember him as an exemplary father, loving son, devoted brother, and friend to so many. He embodied all of the best qualities in these relationships: unconditional love, unending generosity, a quiet, unassuming wit, and most of all, a spirit filled with kindness. Words are not enough to express the depth of loss brought about by Steven's passing and how profoundly he will be missed. Steven will be lovingly remembered every time we enjoy a meal together and when a hand of Shanghai or round of Joker is played.
Steven is survived by his daughters, Jana, 17, and Veronica, 14, both of Belen, NM; his mother, Brenda Luttrell, of Portales, NM; father, Ron Egan and wife, Lorri, of Amarillo, TX; brother, Patrick Egan and wife, Karen; and niece, Lily, of Aurora, CO; sister,, Kellian Egan, of Los Alamos, NM; brother, Kerry Egan and wife, Samantha, of Albuquerque, NM.
Steven is survived by his devoted, and endlessly loving girlfriend, Katie Gutierrez, of Santa Clara Pueblo, NM. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many lifelong friends who were like family to Steven.
Steven was preceded in death by his biological parents, Janet and Robert Duarte, his maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Winnie Luttrell, his paternal grandparents, Max and Maureen Egan, and his grandmother, Gloria Rivera.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service is scheduled for Friday, September 6th, 2024, at 3:00 p.m., at FRENCH – Lomas Chapel, with Pastor Ross Whiteaker officiating.
