Stephen Stein

Stephen Lee Stein, age 77, loved husband, father, friend and colleague, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Stephen was known for his love of classical music, his passion for and obsession with model trains, and his incredible talent and patience for building model ships. He was first and foremost an engaging and dynamic teacher. Stephen spent 30 years teaching High School Biology, Microbiology, Geology, and Astronomy at Rio Grande and La Cueva HS. His dedication to the profession and especially to his students is his legacy. He reveled in the knowledge that his students left his class with an understanding of science and nature, and in many cases a passion to enter the field of science as their career.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Ann Baksa Stein; and his children, Jason Stein and Kristin Meador. He is also survived by his brother, Stuart Stein; sister, Carrie Stein; brother-in-law, Frank Sandry; sister-in-law, Laura Sandry; and his nephew, Brandon Sandry. Also touching his life were Debbie Firstenburg and Richard Fosco. Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, John and Betty Lou Stein; and his sister, Donna Beth Long.

A service will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Stephen's Life will be held Saturday, January 13th, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Stein residence.
