Stephen R. Neary

October 3, 1941 — March 6, 2018

Stephen Neary was a traveler. He spent two years in Turkey with the Peace Corps, traveled back to the States through Asia, and eventually left the east coast for New Mexico, where he spent the majority of his life. On March 6, 2018, Steve left us on his last journey. Steve was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1941. He grew up in the D.C. area and graduated from the University of Maryland. Steve's life and work in New Mexico reflected his varied interests and passions - journalism, auto mechanics, mental health. Eventually he found his true calling as an elementary special education teacher. Steve had a gift for working with children and young adults like him, unwilling or unable to color inside the lines.

Steve loved animals and rescued many. He loved children. He loved his family and friends. He strongly believed in equal opportunities for all, particularly those who cannot take for granted a safe and productive life. He was completely and vocally intolerant of bigotry, prejudice, and willful stupidity.

Steve is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Sarah, sisters Mary Dorothy and Margie, sister-in -law Joan, and their families, as well as Binford, Luna, and Clancy. Steve also leaves his many friends in Albuquerque, throughout the country, and his comrades in Turkey Twelve. Private services will be held at a later date. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the Animal Humane Society of New Mexico or the American Diabetes Association.
