Stephen (Stevie) Michael McCampbell (51) passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022 peacefully, surrounded by love and family. Stevie had a sparkle of life in his eyes and a sweet, mischievous, heartwarming smile. He was a beloved father, son, grandson, nephew, cousin, uncle, brother, neighbor, and friend.
Born on Saturday, September 12, 1970 in Columbus, Ohio. Stevie moved three times by the time he was 8, gaining a sister with each move. Denver, Colorado gave him Laura; Westfield, New Jersey brought him Shannon; and Albuquerque, New Mexico completed the family with Tara. Stevie took on his role as an older brother with devotion and gusto, inventing all kinds of fun games, fantastic stories, and leading innumerable unsanctioned adventures.
Stevie is an alumnus of Our Lady of Fatima, Menaul High School, New Mexico Military Institute, and the University of New Mexico. He left unforgettable impressions everywhere he went.
Since building his first bicycle with his grandfather from a collection of found parts, Stevie realized bicycles were his passion. Riding a bike was the ultimate expression of independence and freedom. Dreaming of starting a high-end bicycle store, he started Fat Tire Cycles in 1994 with three partners on Central Avenue near UNM. It quickly grew and expanded until the store moved to a bigger location on Montano where it is still located but recently sold. Stevie managed the store until 2010, where he brought together a community of cyclists. He taught countless people how to ride a bike, imprinting his enthusiasm and passion for biking onto each new rider.
His daughter, Ruby, was the light of his life. He was immeasurably proud of her intelligence, creativity and individuality, and spoke about her with profound love to anyone who would listen. He loved going on outings with Ruby to the aquarium and zoo, playing laser tag, and driving go carts and bumper boats. He cherished his time with her.
Stevie is survived by his parents, Arlene and Steve McCampbell; his beloved daughter, Ruby McCampbell Custer and her mother, Sasha; siblings, Laura (Justin), Shannon (Jesse), and Tara McCampbell; nephews, Elliott and Wendell McCampbell-Freedman; and his puppy, Sheba. Stevie will forever be missed, but his love and caring spirit will live on.
