Lonz, Stephen Anthony, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 6, 2021. Steve was born and raised in Albuquerque and lived here most of his life. Steve attended St. Pius X High School, where he ran cross country on the track team. He graduated from Manzano High School. Steve received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Mathematics from the University of New Mexico. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. His specialty areas were Combinatorial Analysis and Optimization Theory. Steve was able to solve highly complex problems and make discoveries that noted mathematicians had only surmised to have existed. He had been working on a book detailing these discoveries. Steve was a math professor and had taught at UNM, Concord University in West Virginia, SUNY at Oneonta, Oglala Lakota College in South Dakota, and TV-I in Albuquerque. Other interests included music and architectural drawing. He loved following sports, especially football and basketball, whether it was the Lobos, the NFL or the NBA.
Steve is survived by his sisters, Loretta A. Lonz and Christine M. Gibson (husband Alan) and a brother, Thomas J. Lonz (wife Gina), all of Albuquerque; nieces, Michelle Boady (husband Mike) and Elizabeth Gibson; nephews, Tim Lonz (wife Karissa), Patrick Lonz, Craig Gibson, Christopher Gibson (wife Faith), and Cameron Gibson; 9 grandnieces and grandnephews; two aunts, an uncle, and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, F. Maureen Lonz; his father, Thomas F. Lonz; and brothers, Lawrence M. Lonz and Gary J. Lonz.
Services will be held on Wednesday, September 29th at FRENCH-Wyoming. Visitation from 10 a.m.-11 a.m.; Celebration of Life 11 a.m., followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
