Steve Hillerman, 59, died peacefully from cancer Tuesday, August 23, 2017 at his Albuquerque home. Steve was known for his passions: his love of NASCAR, his devotion to the Pittsburgh Steelers, his loving care for his cats, his happy trips to Hawaii, and, especially, his deep, life-long affection for his nieces and nephews. A long-time Albuquerque resident, Steve attended Sandia High School and then joined the US Navy where he proudly served on the USS Rathburne. Steve enjoyed his work as a truck driver and cable television installer until his retirement, which he enjoyed even more. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Grove Hillerman and Marie Elizabeth Hillerman. He is survived by his five siblings: Anne Hillerman (Don Strel), Jan Grado (Rudy), Tony Hillerman Jr. (Lori), Monica Atwell (Doug) and Daniel B. Hillerman. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Ian Grado, Matthew Grado, Sarah Tuico, Dawn Atwell, Cassandra Atwell, Echo Atwell, Toni Martinez, Danny Hillerman, Candyce Hillerman, and Brandon Hillerman Strel. He leaves behind his wonderful friends David Gallegos, Sydney Chavez and many others, and seven sweetly spoiled felines. At Steve’s request there will be no service. His ashes will be interred near those of his beloved parents on Thursday, August 31, 2017, 11:15 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Animal Humane Association or your favorite charity.
