Retired Air Force Major Stephen Monroe Freeman, 80, passed away peacefully on September 6th, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. Steve was born on September 3, 1943, to James Monroe Freeman and Lillian Josephine Mickle in Elkin, North Carolina.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Steve was a pharmacist for forty-three years in the U.S. Air Force and at the Albuquerque Veteran's Hospital.
Steve was a family man above all. He was a little league coach and scout master and loved hunting, fishing, and camping. A lifelong UNC Tar Heel fan, Steve instilled a love of all things "Carolina" in his family.
Steve and his wife enjoyed traveling and cruising. He also enjoyed spending time with his Albuquerque area retired military friends and frequenting the Sandia Casino where he loved to play poker and cultivated numerous close friendships.
Steve is survived by his wife Helen Louise, his son James Michael of Hillsborough, New Jersey, son Andrew Monroe with wife Kristen and grandchildren Luke and Brooke of Albuquerque and his sister Cathy and husband Frank Albergo of Estero, Florida.
Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Monday, September 11, 2023, at FRENCH-Wyoming with a Celebration of Life at 2 pm on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. A Graveside Service will be held Monday, September 25, 2023, 1:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project or other military veteran's charities.
