Sophie Guest

May 15, 1922 — January 27, 2013

Sophie was born May 15, 1922, to Croatian immigrant parents, George and Philipina Bubany, in Gallup, New Mexico. She was raised in Gallup with two brothers, graduated from Cathedral of the Sacred Heart High School and attended Loretto Heights College in Denver before moving to Albuquerque to pursue a secretarial course. While studying for her certificate she lived in a boarding house where she met her future husband, John Guest. John and Sophie were married in Gallup in 1943 and lived in Texas and California during World War II while John served as a flight instructor in the Army Air Corp and later as a pilot for United Airlines. They moved to Gallup in 1947 where they raised their six children. In Gallup, Sophie was active with family and volunteerism. She served the Gallup community as a Pink Lady at St. Mary's Hospital, was a member of the Cathedral Altar Society and was a member of the Rotary Club's Women Auxiliary. After retirement in 1981 and for the next 23 years John and Sophie divided their time between Wickenburg and Pinetop, AZ, where Sophie learned to play golf, took flying lessons to be able to land a small airplane in an emergency, played cards and became a marginally good Bridge player! While living in Wickenburg, Sophie also volunteered at the Public Library delivering books to the homebound. In 2004 John and Sophie moved back to Albuquerque to be near family. For the past several years, Sophie enjoyed accompanying a daughter delivering Meals on Wheels in Albuquerque's South Valley. Sophie was preceded in death by her brothers George and Rudy Bubany and her husband of 68 years, John. She is survived by children Michael (Sandy) Guest, Phyllis (Fred) Bachhuber, Ellen Guest, Regina (Mark) Guest-Rupert, Christopher (Suzanne) Guest, and Marigail Littlefield; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Celebration of the Mass at 10:00 a.m. at Aquinas Newman Center on UNM's campus, 1815 Las Lomas Blvd, NE, Albuquerque, NM. Paid parking (credit card only) is available in the parking structure at Lomas and Yale Boulevards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Sophie B. Guest's name to The Little Sisters of the Poor, 1900 Mark Avenue, Gallup, NM 87301.
