Shirley Mae Udoni

April 24, 1935 — April 28, 2020

Shirley Mae Udoni, age 85, born on April 24, 1935 in Chicago, resident of Waupaca, WI, and Albuquerque NM, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2020. Shirley was the daughter of Florence (Hallihan) and Henry Brown of Chicago. In 1956, she married Joseph O. Udoni (deceased) and they enjoyed a 51-year marriage. Shirley was a loving mother of Jean Udoni Patrick (Jeff) of Evanston, IL, Joseph (Suzanne) of Waupaca, WI, and John (Darlene) of Albuquerque, NM. She was a devoted grandmother of Jessica and Alyse (Patrick), Shellady Udoni Horn, Karissa, Isabella Udoni, and Laura Udoni. She was a loving sister to Bob Brown, (Pleasonton, CA), and Tom Brown (deceased, Chicago, IL).

Shirley was known for her loving heart and joy for life, and she was a light of love and goodness to all who knew her. Shirley was always able to find the positive in any situation and had the unique ability to create so many moments in life that were interesting and fun. Shirley lived her life mantra, “It’s important to be a roller.” This outlook embodied the faith and hope that guided her and helped her through life’s challenges. Shirley’s cooking, sewing, and fashion sense were creative outlets that connected her with people and brought joy to many. Her warm, trusting, and engaging personality helped her become the leading personal shopper for Nordstrom and Marshall Fields.

A devoted mother, she supported the children's programs as Girl Scout Leader and South Elm Baseball League President, and was active in local community fundraising initiatives bringing people together to help others. Shirley was a natural community organizer, and her passions were contagious to everyone who was in her orbit. Shirley was an active woman who loved her daily walks, which she continued well into her later years. In 1999, she walked with her daughter and friends in the first Avon 60-mile walk to raise money for breast cancer.

Shirley had many close friends throughout her life and enjoyed hosting parties to share her love of cooking, sense of humor, and infectious laughter. Her positive outlook and sense of adventure kept her positive throughout her life and motivated those around her to smile and appreciate the gifts of life. The world has lost an amazing spirit and her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
