Shirley Smith

Shirley J. Smith passed away August 25, 2024. She was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The family soon moved to Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where she grew up with her brother and graduated high school. Shortly after, they moved to Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She then attended Wheaton College. Shirley began her teaching career in Carlisle Junior High School in 1955. She acquired her master's degree at Northwestern University.

Shirley traveled to Albuquerque in 1959 where she continued her teaching career until retirement. In the late 80s Shirley helped initiate an exchange program between La Cueva High School, and a school in Moscow, Russia. She made several trips with groups of students and then went by herself to teach in the Moscow school for six months.

Another highlight of her life was attendance, seven times at the C.S. Lewis Summer Institute in Oxford and Cambridge, England.

Shirley is survived by her brother, Dick, and wife, Lois, and nieces and nephews, and her lifelong friend, (the "other Shirley".)

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, September 19, 1 PM at French Funerals on Wyoming.
