Lt. Col. Shirley Eleanora Whitehurst McGuire, US Air Force Nurse Corps Retiree, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on November 16, 2022, after a brief illness. She was born in Florida on November 25, 1933, grew up in Tampa, attended Nursing School in New Orleans, and joined the A.F. Nurse Corps in January 1960.
Shirley served over 22 years as an Operating Room Nurse and also performed duties as a Flight Nurse at Clark AB, caring for casualties being moved out of Viet Nam. She was later assigned to Flight Nurse duties out of Scott AFB, IL. Shirley was fortunate to be assigned to Alaska; Bitburg, Germany; and various stateside locations, including Kirtland AFB in 1979, later retiring with her husband, Dale McGuire, in Albuquerque.
She is survived by her brother, Louis Eddie Whitehurst; and some cousins in Tampa, FL; as well as some stepsons and step-grandchildren. She was a devout member of the Sandia Baptist Church in Albuquerque. Shirley was a member and Past President of the Cosmopolitan Women’s Club. She participated faithfully in military functions in NM, working tirelessly for the Annual Tribute to Military Women every March, and was a member of the Aeromedical Evacuation Association, the Military Officers Association of America, and the Society of Air Force Nurses. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
There will be a visitation at FRENCH - Wyoming on Tuesday, November 29, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be the same day at 1:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
