Sergio Anthony De Haro, Ph.D.  (1960-2021)

Sergio A. De Haro (60 yrs. old), a longtime resident of Albuquerque, NM, died July 2nd, 2021 due to complications from renal disease. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Leyma De Haro; his beloved dog Chacky; and many siblings, nieces and nephews, family, and friends.

Sergio grew up in Los Angeles, CA; where he went to Cal. State Los Angeles and earned a B.S. in Biochemistry. He later moved to Albuquerque with his wife, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of New Mexico. His doctorate work made important contributions to the understanding of mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of white blood cells. His research further contributed to the understanding of the human papilloma virus, other infectious diseases, and cancer.

Sergio taught Biochemistry at UNM and Anatomy and Physiology at CNM. He was passionate about his students, many of whom went on to become professionals in science and healthcare. He had passion for soccer, aviation, politics, and all things technological. Sergio had a wicked sense of humor and was one of the best human beings we have known. Wherever he went, he touched people’s lives in positive ways, and he was an inspiration to many. He has left a big hole in all our hearts and will be sorely missed.

A plaque in his memory will be placed at Sunset Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, Shriners Hospital, the local food pantry, local animal shelter, or any charitable organization of your choice.

A celebration of life will take place in the future.
