Obituary

Sara Dawn Smith left us October 18, 2024 at the age of 94. Sara Dawn was pre-deceased by her loving husband Bill and wonderful daughter Virginia Hopkins. She was the daughter of Chester and Lucille Mitcham and lived most of her life here in New Mexico. Sara Dawn is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Smith, her son Dwight Smith and daughter-in-law Kim Smith. She also has 3 wonderful grandchildren that were the light of her life - Daniel Hopkins, Mackenzie Smith and Erin Smith.

Sara Dawn was a graduate of Albuquerque High School. She attended the University of New Mexico where she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees and the University of Maryland where she earned her phD. She was a lifelong educator. Serving as a professor at the University of New Mexico she took pride in her work on the English as a Second Language program, and the Multicultural and Cooperative Teacher program. She was the recipient of 2 Fulbright grants that allowed her and Biil to travel abroad and teach.

Sara Dawn was a loyal and loving friend and in Bill found a true life partner. She would often speak of their love and the many things they shared together even as other memories faded.

Her kind and gentle presence will be missed, as will her amazing smile and big hugs. Her family takes comfort in the fact that she is no longer in pain and is at peace.

Service for Sara Dawn will be held Wednesday November 6, 2024 at 10:00 am at Sandia Presbyterian Church.
