Fortner, Sanford Lackey Sanford (Sandy) Fortner, age 92, a lone time resident of Albuquerque, passed away the evening of July 1, 2015 at Franciscan St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers Indianapolis, IN, after an illness of several months. Sandy was born in old Augusta, IN, on July 20, 1922 to Sanford Lackey Fortner and Ruth Wagner Fortner. He spent his early years in and around Franklin, IN, graduating from high school there. Following his school years, Sandy was employed by Indianapolis Power and Light until 1949 when he moved to Albuquerque. He began working for Southern Union Gas Company that same year. Though Southern Union Gas Company later became Gas Company of New Mexico, he continued working there until his retirement in August 1984. Sandy married Margaret Gertrude Ruhl in Albuquerque on February 23, 1957. Margaret preceded Sandy in death on June 30, 2014. There were no children. Sandy and Margaret loved to travel and many trips to Honolulu, Hawaii and other locations such as Hong Kong, Ceylon, Singapore, Bangkok, Venezuela and Curacao. They liked Hawaii so much they planned to purchase some land, build a home and move there for their retirement years. However that did not happen. He was an avid photographer and documented their trips with many photos, some winning awards. For Sandy's ham radio friends, his call number was WB5CYK. He had ham radio call numbers from all over the world posted in his radio room. Sandy is survived by his niece, Paula Fortner Bottoms, her husband, Johnnie; several grand nieces and nephews in the Franklin area; as well as his longtime friend Campbell McMordie in Albuquerque.
