Sally Ann (Smith) Cavell passed away peacefully on October 30, 2024 in Albuquerque, New Mexico with close family by her side. After a lifetime of living with Type 1 Diabetes, Sally is finally at peace from her disease.
Sally was born on February 8, 1956 in Billings, Montana to Myrtle Jane (Harris) Smith and Chester Anthony Smith.
She attended Billings Senior High School in Billings, Montana. After high school she attended Montana State University in Bozeman where she studied art. She began her career as a musician and, one evening while playing guitar at a venue in Bozeman, she met Ben Cavell who was in the audience. He mentioned that he was a drummer and was interested in getting a band together. They married in 1978 and had two bands; Willow and Hot Pursuit. They played in venues throughout Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.
They relocated to Corrales, New Mexico just outside of Albuquerque where they had a small farm. After nine years of being on the road, Sally and Ben decided to pursue different careers.
Sally obtained her Associates Degree with honors from TVI Community College and worked as a Paralegal for several law firms in Albuquerque.
Sally had a love of music, family, friends and her many beloved dogs and cats who she cared for with endless compassion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mrytle Jane (Harris) Smith and Chester Anthony Smith. Also preceding her were her sisters, Barbara Ann (Smith) McDougal and Jacque Lynn (Smith) Gruger; and nephew, Timmothy Smith.
She is survived by her brothers, Gary Eugene Smith (Rhonda), and Roger Dean Smith (Ann Bentdahl). She leaves behind her dear friend, Sally Gossett, affectionately known as "The Other Sally"; and nieces and nephews, Brooke and Joe Gruger, Michael and Chrissy McDougal, Tyler and Corey Smith, and Kristopher and Tracy Smith.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 22, 2024, 6:00 p.m., at FRENCH - University. An additional gathering for family and friends will be held at the ranch of Roger Smith and Ann Bentdahl Saturday, June 14, 2025, from Noon to 4:00 p.m., located at 9332 US Highway 212, Joliet, MT 59041.
