Ruth Rand, age 78, passed away on September 2, 2013 surrounded by her family after a valiant battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her beloved husband, Bill Wible, and her children from her first husband, the late Wilfred Kolman, Marc Kolman, Ross Kolman and Rachel Kolman and grandchildren, Corrie Brown, Lillie Kolman, Imani Kolman, Lyla Kolman, and Ari Kolman. Ruth, daughter of Seymour and Frida Rand, was born on March 31, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA. She attended Girls High in Philadelphia PA, and subsequently Swarthmore College where she received a BA, University of Pennsylvania where she received an MS, followed by post graduate work. While she worked on several research projects over the years, her true passion was teaching. From 1991 thru 2006 Ruth taught Chemistry at the Albuquerque Academy. Ruth also taught at the North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics and at the Latin School of Chicago where she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching, and numerous awards and fellowships including: The Albert Einstein Distinguished teaching Award and the Illinois Science Teacher's Association Distinguishes Educator Award. During a career spanning 40 years, Ruth instilled an appreciation of chemistry and her love for learning to young people. She specifically encouraged young girls to pursue educations in science and math. She also loved hiking, skiing, tennis, literature and of course being with her family. Services will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2013, 2:00 p.m., at the First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle Blvd. NE.
