Ruby B. Meek

April 6, 1928 — July 22, 2015

Ruby B. Meek, 87, was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven in the early hours of July 22, 2015. Ruby was born April 6, 1928 in Hattiesburg, MS and spent her childhood in Laurel, MS. At the age of 16, she graduated high school and moved to Tennessee where she attended Lee College. She met James Meek during a Sunday School lesson she was teaching at church in May of 1949, and the two were married 6 months later. In 1952, they moved to Albuquerque where they made their permanent home and raised 2 children, Jim and Carole. Ruby operated her own business, Meek Photography, from 1960 to 1999. She had a strong love of music, specifically Southern Gospel, and taught piano and guitar lessons, as well as played many services at several local churches. Passionate about working with children, Ruby was the Bernalillo County 4-H Rabbit and Photography leader and was an integral part of the rabbit exhibit at the State Fair for many years. She also served as the Los Duranes Neighborhood Association President for 6 years. Ruby is survived by her son, James E. Meek, Jr.; daughter, Carole A. Meek-Bowers; two granddaughters, Amanda Chavez and Elizabeth Steplowski; great-granddaughter, Ashley; her half-sisters Mary Joyce Robinson, Shirley Ann Shortridge, and Janet Polson, and her half-brothers, Victor Benton Boutwell and Hillary Benton Boutwell, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, James E. Meek, Sr.; her parents, Hillary and OreAC. Boutwell; and step-mother Victoria Boutwell; her brother Ray and sister Elsie OreAC.. Visitation will be held Monday, July 27, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at French-University. Services will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at French-University. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
